Police Crack Down on Gangs in San Ignacio Following Local Leader’s Death

The government has ordered a crackdown on all gang elements operating in San Ignacio and Santa Elena to quell the concerns of the community’s business sector. In recent months, crime in the twin towns has had a dramatic increase in crime with two murders and several armed robberies. Over the weekend, police increased efforts amid the death of local gang leader, David Galindo, whose associates are wanted by police. The department has identified active gang members, including Galindo’s brother Mynor Galindo. However, Galindo denies the claim and issued a release today proclaiming innocence. In the release he states, quote, “Two weeks ago, as I approached my gate, a black Chevrolet Equinox approached me. I turned to face the vehicle, and a man leaped out, brandishing a firearm and attempting to shoot me in the head. I managed to tackle the gunman, disarming him before he could fire, and dragged him into a drain. As I fled the scene, another gunman exited the vehicle from the passenger side and fired approximately eight shots in my direction. Fortunately, I escaped unharmed. A week later that same black Chevrolet Equinox carried out a drive-by shooting targeting my brother, David Galindo. …. It is devastating that we, the victims of these heinous attacks, are now being unjustly portrayed as perpetrators. No one has been arrested or charged for my brother’s death.” End of quote.  Today, while meeting with business owners and members of the community, the Commissioner of Police responded to Galindo’s claims.

Commissioner Williams chastised a few of his officers in the twin towns for failing to keep the citizenry safe and explained that the department would be taking immediate measures to increase their presence in the municipality.
