Prison Officer Shot During Inmate’s Escape Attempt

A prison guard is recovering after being accidentally shot during a dramatic escape attempt earlier today. Just after 4 p.m., prison guards spotted inmate Lincoln Myvette scaling the inner fence of the facility.Despite repeated warnings to stop, Myvette continued climbing, prompting guards to follow standard procedure by firing warning shots in an effort to deter him. Unfortunately, one of those shots ricocheted off a prison wall and struck a female officer in the leg. She was quickly transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where she received medical attention. Our newsroom understands she is in stable condition and expected to recover. Myvette, who was eventually restrained by officers, is reported to suffer from mental health challenges. His condition may have contributed to the incident, though an investigation is now underway to determine exactly what transpired and whether protocols were properly followed. The Belize Central Prison has yet to issue an official statement, but prison authorities are expected to review security measures following this incident.
