The Belize City Magistrate’s Court has ordered a psychiatric evaluation for thirty-three-year-old Ashban Grant, to determine if he is fit to stand trial. Grant appeared in court today on a single charge of manslaughter in connection with the stabbing death of 67-year-old Griffith McNaughton Cadle. No plea was taken. In court, Grant’s relatives told the Magistrate that he no previous history of mental illness until he was incarcerated at the Belize Central Prison some time ago. However, they had no official documentation to support the diagnosis. With that, the Magistrate remanded Grant until August 23 and ordered that an evaluation be conducted at the prison. Griffith Cadle was stabbed in Belize City just before ten o’clock on the night of Saturday, June 15. He was walking with another person, believed to be Grant, on St. Joseph Street when the other man stabbed him to the upper left side of the back near the spine and to the upper left side of the chest. Cadle collapsed at the intersection of St. Joseph Street and Nurse Seay Street and had died by the time police arrived.
