Redistricting Bill finally makes it to the HOR

The People’s Representation Bill 2024 was also presented in the House today, related to the court-ordered Redistricting Exercise.  Minister of Public Service, Henry Charles Usher, made the presentation, noting that there is not much that could be divulged since it is a matter before the court.  He did note that a consent order was agreed to between the claimants and the defendants and as a part of that agreement was the Bill that was introduced in the House today.  Prime Minister Briceno did speak on the redistricting exercise indicating that the window until the next general elections might be too tight.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “Well we have to follow the process. We have to follow the law and the process is that it has to go first to the House. It has to go to House Committee and then it comes for vote and until that time happens we can’t move. So we have to wait. Whether we have enough time it’s very tight because next year by November of Next year we have to have an election and the redistricting takes some time because a lot of ground has to do on the ground and if you’re going to change the boundaries and the voters and all of that so it takes time. If we were to quickly move probably maybe we could still do it but we have to wait and see.”
