The Senate continues at this hour in Belmopan for its first sitting since the parliamentary break. In today’s Senate meeting, a motion involving the World Trade Organization was presented by Alternate Senator for Government Business, Anthony Sylvestre, and debated for almost three hours. Senator Sylvestre underscored Belize’s commitment to the principles of the World Trade Organization (WTO), while highlighting the importance of fair trade for small and vulnerable economies. He Sylvestre explained that Belize, as a member of the WTO, benefits from access to global markets and the protection of trade rules that safeguard developing countries. He stressed, however, that Belize continues to face challenges in competing with larger, more developed economies. For this reason, the government has consistently advocated within the WTO framework for special and differential treatment for small states.
Opposition Senator Patrick Faber raised concerns over Belize’s engagement with the World Trade Organization (WTO), stressing that while membership offers potential benefits, it also brings risks that could affect local industries. Faber noted that Belize must carefully weigh the implications of binding trade commitments, particularly when it comes to safeguarding the livelihoods of Belizean farmers and small businesses. He cautioned that without strong domestic policies and protections in place, Belize could find itself at a disadvantage in competing with larger economies under WTO rules.
