Toledo East Bi-Election Set for July 17th

The much-anticipated bi-election for Toledo East is scheduled for July 17th where candidates will vie for the vacant seat. 7,725 eligible voters will be able to cast their ballots at one of 20 polling stations set up across the constituency. Those nominated are Wil Maheia of the People’s National Party, Osmond Martinez of the People’s United Party, and Dennis Williams of the United Democratic Party. Today, the Chief Elections Officer, Josephine Tamai, spoke with Love News about the preparations and adjustments being made.

Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer, Elections and Boundaries Department: “Belize Progressive Party has changed their name to the People’s National Party. And so the color green remains. And so just for persons to understand that there is no longer the Belize Progressive Party because their name has been changed to the People’s National Party. And so when voters go to the polls, they will be seeing the People’s National Party contesting along with the People’s United Party and the United Democratic Party. So persons who registered from the second July 2018 up until the 10th of June 2024. Those are the persons who are eligible to vote for this by-election.”

The commission has reminded voters to maintain good conduct throughout the voting process at their respective polling stations. Tamai explained that there have been policies and management rules to ensure a smooth and orderly election day as this is an important date for the political landscape.

Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer, Elections and Boundaries Department: “20 polling stations across the Toledo East Electoral Division. And counting will take place at the Toledo Community College in Punta Gorda Town. So all boxes will be transported from the polling stations to the counting station, which is the Toledo Community College.”
