Toledo Family Mourns BDF Soldier’s Tragic Death Following Road Traffic Incident

A family in the South is mourning the loss of their loved one after he succumbed to injuries sustained in a road traffic incident nine days ago. Just after midnight on July 13, Belize Defense Force soldier Venancio Coy Jr. was hit by a motorcycle in Cattle Landing Village, Toledo. According to reports, the 31-year-old was leaving a nightclub when he was struck and flung to the pavement on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway. The father of one sustained severe injury and was initially taken to the Punta Gorda Community Hospital. However, due to the extent of his injuries, he was transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he passed away last night. His godfather Alfonso Sanchez spoke to our newsroom about Coy and described his loss as a blow to the Toledo District.

Alfonso Sanchez, Godfather of Deceased: “There’d be many that would say that, you know, don’t wait for the person is dead to say that he’s good but I can attest and I can tell the world today that this was one Godson who showed me all the love from the very first day I became his Godfather. In fact, he made me the Godparent because I was still single at the time when I became his Godparent and then he welcomed my wife as his Godmother as we got married some years after. And he gave us all his love. He gave us all his respect. And I have always shared with my wife even at the time when I was very ill, you know as I had gone through life surgery myself and my life threatening surgery myself you know he came by, he was here to see me and I certainly say that his love has been throughout the years, you know not only that he’s dead now that I will give him praises but I’ve always, we’ve kept a relationship throughout the years of his life, I would say. He would always take the time to wish me a happy birthday, wish my boys a happy birthday, congratulate them when they all did well, called me or called his Godmother when it’s birthday time or even stopping with a hot bowl of caldo. That is the love that he had for us. It’s similar than the love he shared with us, the same genuine love that he gave the larger community.”

Coy was a resident of Big Falls Village, Toledo.
