In a move aimed at stabilizing the United Democratic Party (UDP) following recent electoral setbacks and leadership resignations, Interim Leader Hon. Tracy Panton is advocating for a return to the status quo ante, as defined by a court injunction order issued last year concerning the party headquarters and assets. This return to the previous state of affairs would reinstate the original standard bearers of the party, with adjustments made only for constituencies where newly elected representatives differ from those previously holding the positions. This decision comes in the wake of the March 12 General Elections and the subsequent resignations of former Party Leader Shyne Barrow and Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte. Hon. Panton’s initiative seeks to maintain continuity and stability during a critical transitional period. Notably, Deputy Leaders and Vice Chairman Alberto August remain in their respective roles under this status quo ante. Following a meeting with Vice Chairman August, who declined to convene a National Party Council (NPC) meeting, Hon. Panton has endorsed the constitutional process of petitioning for such a meeting. According to the UDP Constitution, a valid petition compels the Secretary General (Shary Medina, under the status quo ante) and Vice Chairman August to proceed with calling the NPC meeting. The petition calls for the NPC to convene on Saturday, May 17, or alternatively, Saturday, May 24. The primary objective of this meeting is to elect an Interim Chairman to fill the vacancy left by Michael Peyrefitte and to formally establish a date for the next National Convention of the party. First Deputy Party Leader, Hugo Patt, has publicly declared his unwavering support for Hon. Tracy Panton’s interim leadership until the upcoming leadership convention. Caretakers and party representatives from across the nation have also voiced their collective endorsement, demonstrating a unified front behind Hon. Panton’s leadership during this period of transition. The upcoming NPC meeting is expected to be a pivotal moment for the UDP, as it seeks to solidify its leadership and direction in the aftermath of recent challenges.
