The need for an upgraded immigration system was highlighted this morning as over one hundred students lined up at the western border for processing. Just before eight o’clock, our newsroom received footage of primary school students waiting to be processed in order to get to school. Each weekday, hundreds of students cross over into Belize to attend classes on both primary and secondary levels. This morning, concerns grew when there was a significant delay causing the students to be late for school. Love News understands that there are several issues being faced at the western border including limited space for travelers. Other issues include the volume of students that have to be checked individually via a special student card. One senior official from the Immigration Department noted that checking the students individually cannot be circumvented primarily due to child protection purposes and the country’s fight against human trafficking. Additionally, Love News has learnt that the department is upgrading its Border Management System but is currently experiencing a few glitches which could possibly be a contributing factor to the delays.
