The Government of Belize, through the Fisheries Department, has announced the annual closure of the sea cucumber fishery as part of its continued commitment to sustainable marine resource management. According to the Fisheries Department, the sea cucumber fishery will be closed from February 1 to July 31, in accordance with Statutory Instruments No. 67 of 2009 and No. 107 of 2022. During this closed season, it is strictly prohibited for any person to fish for, harvest, buy, sell, possess, export, or attempt to export any species of sea cucumber. Authorities warn that anyone found in possession of sea cucumber during the closed period will be charged and prosecuted under the Fisheries Regulations. The seasonal closure is a critical conservation measure aimed at allowing sea cucumber stocks to regenerate, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the fishery and protecting the livelihoods of fishers who depend on healthy marine ecosystems. The Fisheries Department is appealing to the fishing community and the general public for their continued cooperation in safeguarding this valuable national resource. Persons wishing to obtain additional information or report illegal fishing activity are encouraged to contact the Fisheries Department at 224-4552.
