Accused Car Battery Thief Remanded to Prison

A Ladyville resident was sent to prison after he failed to meet bail for alleged car battery theft. 26-year-old Hilberto Ramos appeared before Chief Magistrate today where he was charged with theft. Allegations are that Ramos stole three car batteries, totaling $875 from Clive Jones. In Court, Ramos pleaded not guilty stating that he was caught with the bag of batteries after a man told him to hold the bag for him and drove off. The Crown objected to bail since Ramos could not provide an address to the court and was viewed as a flight risk. The Chief Magistrate did not agree with the prosecutor; however and granted Ramos conditional bail in the sum of $5,000 plus two sureties of the same amount.  Conditions to Ramos’ bail include that he pays an old court fine of $30 before posting bail and that he cannot be arrested and charged with another offense while he is out on bail. Failing to meet bail, Ramos was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June 28.
