During the public hearing, Belize Electricity Limited’s CEO, John Mencias, shared the key points of its submission to the PUC. The submission includes maintaining the pre-tax Mean Electricity Rate at 40 cents per kilowatt hour, restructuring existing electricity rates, and introducing new pricing regimes that would allow for those with the means to generate power to connect to the national grid and sell excess power to BEL. CEO Mencias made the case for BEL’s proposal by explaining that Belize has the fourth best price in the region for power and that those countries with better prices are heavily subsidized. He also spoke on the company’s plans for investment.
BEL says it applauds the PUC for its landmark decision to approve the proposed pricing regimes geared towards facilitating distributed generation and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The PUC also approved the proposal for a Feed-in Tariff of 13 cents per kilowatt hour for the purchase of electricity by BEL from grid-tied Customers who export excess energy to our national grid.
