Belize and Venezuela are working together to improve the sporting sector in both nations. A week ago, Sports Minister Rodwell Ferguson and several athletes traveled to Venezuela for the sixth Central American and Caribbean School Sports Games. While Belize didn’t medal in the event, Ferguson, who is also President of the CONSECADE, says the athletes performed well. Today, he spoke about the memorandum of understanding signed between the Central American countries to enhance sports and youth development.

Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Sports: “As the minister responsible for sports I went to Venezuela to sign a memorandum of understanding with the minister of sports in Venezuela in the area of cooperation, in investment in facilities and some kind of cooperation between both countries. As a small country, there is not much we can offer but I feel that the assistance from Venezuela will be tremendous and I will follow up on the MOU to make sure that we see some benefits in Belize and likewise Venezuela see some benefits. In our area of assistance might maybe be their coming to Belize to learn English at an institution, but from their end we expect to see something tremendous coming to the country of Belize. It was a very good trip and on the athletic side we took five athletes; three males and two females. Unfortunately, the temperature in Venezuela was a bit different from that in Belize and initially as they got there all five of them got the flu. So that was a distraction for them to participate in the games and so they tried their best but they weren’t successful to win a medal. But nevertheless we are proud of them. I believe as they progress they will see a success.”
