The Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), has unveiled a new five hundred-million-dollar plan to transform Belize’s energy sector. Today, BEL held its stakeholder engagement meeting where it announced plans to move towards utilizing greener sources of energy over a five-year span. The company is also aiming to expand its services across the country, particularly in rural comminutes. Jose Moreno, BEL’s General Manager of Energy Supply and Transmission, says the plan is geared at energizing the sector with cleaner sources of electricity.

Jose Moreno, General Manager, Energy Supply and Transmission: “This is a new philosophy that will spur growth in sales but also in the quicker provision of those services to those new customers. The plan had quite a few requirements to comply with; reliability of supply, the energy security, resiliency, of course lease cost, lease risk and sustainability and meeting the environmental requirements.”\

Moreno also explained that the demand for electricity on Ambergris Caye, a tourist hotspot, has increased over the years, prompting the company to expand service on the island.

Jose Moreno, General Manager, Energy Supply and Transmission: “Well as the same reliability of supply but not only that the demand in San Pedro is ever growing. The cable that supplies them right now is 70% already loaded so we have to do something to ensure that any future developments will be served.
