Belize Enhances National Security with Inauguration of Twelve-Million-Dollar Surveillance Radar System

Belize’s capability to detect incoming aircraft has been greatly improved with the historic installation of a primary surveillance radar system. The official inauguration of the twelve-million-dollar piece of equipment was held today on the grounds of the Philip Goldson International Airport. Prime Minister John Briceno explained that the radar was acquired through collaboration with the Central American Corporation for Air Navigation Services (COCESNA) and the defence intelligence company INDRA Systems. He added that the radar will help to bolster both the country’s tourism sector as well as national defense.

Former Minister of Civil Aviation Andre Perez stressed that the radar inaugurated today is the most up-to-date model in the region. Perez added that everything is in place for the radar’s smooth operations from trained personnel operating it, to a maintenance plan.

The radar tower stands a hundred and two feet tall. Representatives from INDRA Systems and CONESCA were on site for the inauguration.
