Belize Peace Movement Urges Redistricting Ahead of 2025 General Elections, PM Weighs in

The redistricting exercise that the Belize Peace Movement (BPM) had fought for at the courts is yet to take place.  The BPM hoped that it would have been done in time for the municipal elections last month.  With that not being the case, the movement is now clamoring for it to happen before the general elections in 2025.  Prime Minister John Briceno was asked to weigh in on the delay in having the draft document presented to the National Assembly.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “That’s a matter that’s being handled by Minister Henry Charles Usher who is in charge of the Elections and Boundaries and I am sure that there is some legitimate reason why it has not gone to the National Assembly but I think he would be the best person to answer your question. As I will always say it is a free country, it’s a democratic country and it is within their right whether they want to take out an injunction or not.”

Reporter: But will you fight against it ?
Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize:“When that time comes we will decide.”

The Redistricting Task Force submitted its report to the Elections and Boundaries Commission in June last year.
