Meanwhile, the British Army Training Support Unit Belize (BATSUB) has officially marked a change of command, bringing to a close the tenure of Lieutenant Colonel Somerville and welcoming Lieutenant Colonel Wallace as the new commander. In a statement issued following the transition, BATSUB confirmed that Lt. Col. Somerville has completed his official handover after two years of service. The British Army Training Support Unit Belize (BATSUB) is the permanent British military presence in Belize and operates under a long-standing defence cooperation agreement between Belize and the United Kingdom. BATSUB is responsible for facilitating jungle warfare and environmental training for British and allied troops, using designated training areas across Belize. Thousands of soldiers rotate through the country annually to undergo survival, navigation, and operational training in tropical conditions. Beyond military training, BATSUB also works closely with Belizean authorities, including the Belize Defence Force and local emergency services, and has historically supported humanitarian assistance, disaster response, conservation efforts, and community projects.
