Cabinet Approves Changes to Tariffs, Building Codes, and Central Bank Governance

In addition to the major decisions made regarding public health nurses, redistricting and land taxes, were several other decisions made by Cabinet on Tuesday. Specifically, it authorized the Minister of Public Utilities, Energy, and Logistics to sign a Statutory Instrument amending the Water Industry (Tariffs) Byelaws. The amendment extends the current Full Tariff Period by one year, shifting the commencement date from April 1, 2025 to April 1, 2026, and maintaining existing tariffs, fees, and charges until March 31, 2026. Cabinet also approved proposed amendments to the Belize Building Codes, designed to better reflect the country’s natural conditions and improve building infrastructure. The changes aim to mitigate vulnerabilities, strengthen governance, and ensure public health, safety, and environmental protection. Additionally, Cabinet endorsed the tabling of a legislative amendment to the Central Bank of Belize Act to include the Director General of the Financial Services Commission as a member of the Central Bank’s Board of Directors. Lastly, Cabinet approved the Policy on the Preparation of a Fiscal Strategy Plan and a Disaster Risk Financing Policy as part of Belize’s commitment to the World Bank’s Sustainable Development Policy.
