Cabinet has approved a significant change in the management of land taxes, which will now be channeled through the Belize Tax Services (BTS). While the transition will not be immediate, the move is expected to improve the efficiency of land tax collection across the country. The process will be implemented gradually, with a phased transition period of 12 months. According to Cabinet, this change aims to streamline operations and ensure more effective collection practices. Love News understands that the IRIS platform, which is currently used for various government services, will be adapted to handle the assessments, billings, and collections of land tax. Minister of State for Finance Christopher Coye spoke about the integration, adding that the move would simplify the tax process for both landowners and the government.
Coye added that the phased approach to the transition will also allow for necessary adjustments to be made to the system, with the goal of making the process more efficient and accessible for the public.
