Cayo Men Shot in Cotton Tree Village; Police Investigate Murder Attempt

Police in western Belize are investigating the murder of one man and the attempted murder of his friend. On Saturday night, 41-year-old Clint Castillo and 32-year-old Andrew Muns were shot in Cotton Tree Village, Cayo. Police say the men were socializing when they got into a fight that led to bloodshed. Reporter Vejea Alvarez has the story.

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Tonight one man is dead, another is clinging to life and their alleged killer is on the run after a fist fight turned fatal in Cotton Tree Village on Saturday night. Around 10:35 41 year old Clint Castillo and 32 year old Andrew Muns were socializing when Muns and another villager began to argue. The dispute quickly escalated and Castillo intervened allegedly pulling a knife. But before he could have helped his friend the man opened fire on him and Muns. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero says Castillo died on the spot while Muns was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital.

ACP, Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “These persons were along with other persons in the area when an argument started between them. One of the persons then pulled out a firearm and fired shots towards them causing the fatal injuries to Clint Castillo. Andrew Muns remains at the hospital in critical condition. One person is in custody for this shooting and we’re seeking one more person in regards to this murder.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News:  Police canvassed the yard on an unnamed street and found two expended shells and a knife allegedly wielded by Castillo. His sister, Anna Carter, spoke about the incident and why she believed he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Anna Castillo Carter, Sister: “Clint is a person that wants to be there for his friend. Families you know ? So if he sees a friend is attacked he will step out and try and that is what I understand happened and for them to just turn around and take his life like he’s an animal. He’s not an animal. My mom was not an animal that gave birth to him. Because come on. Come on. He came to the situation not to, he didn’t come with a gun you understand me ? He came to defend his friend and you turned around and took his life.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News:  Castillo’s murder comes only weeks before his 40th birthday and months after his younger brother Chris Castillo was wanted for murder was killed by police. His family stressed that while the two were close the older Castillo was not a trouble maker or known to police. They also called on authorities to find his killer.

Anna Castillo Carter, Sister: These two boys were two different individuals. Yeah Castillos but they’re two different individuals. You understand? You don’t judge one to the other. Yeah the good suffers for the bad but I hope they do the proper thing that they nee to do to catch this killer. This is four months within their deaths and now we’re gonna have to deal with this death here. All I have to do right now is to be strong for my siblings because the gunman they don’t know what they’re doing to us. They don’t know how we’re taking it.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Whilst Muns’ family is awaiting his hopeful recovery and departure from the hospital Castillo’s relatives are planning his funeral and reminiscing on the memories made with the father of one.

Anna Castillo Carter, Sister: “Us the family will remember Clint as a funny, he will always be the life of the party you understand ? His little drinking likes to get out of hand but a funny funny person and right now we’re shocked. We’re shocked because we never expected that and talking about him all the time I get teary because we were born so close. We were born one year apart and his son is taking it hard. He is a family man. He loved kids, all his nieces he took them as his own and they will miss that about him.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Notably Cotton Tree Village is included in the current state of emergency.
