Commissioner Vows Tighter Scrutiny on Personnel at Leadership Intervention Unit

While Underwood was able to operate under the radar without alarms being raised at the LIU, the Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, says others will not be allowed to do so. ComPol today stated that the organization does not work with persons who are engaged in criminal activities. Williams says that the LIU is determined to work with as many people as they can to help them in changing their lives. He explained that the organization is saving lives through their efforts.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “The fact that we have detained some persons who are connected to LIU or who are part of LIU as a part of the SOE, it goes to show that being a member of LIU is not a get out of jail free card because some might have that mentality that “oh because I’m part of LIU, they can’t do me nothing.” No. When you’re a part of LIU we expect that you are going to do things that are in line with LIU standard and the minute you step out of that, then you must be sanctioned. It’s as simple as that. While we look at one particular area that is a part of LIU and they had strayed, we can also look at the other ten areas that are part of LIU that are really and truly holding up. So if you have one out of ten how could it be that it’s failing? It shows that it’s still working and we intend to continue to do our best to make sure it works. In any organization you go you’ll find that there’ll be somebody who is not going to tow the line of the organization. It’s just human nature. So the fact that we have persons who are a part of LIU, who are not towing the line or do as expected of them should not mean that the entire program is not good. If the program saves one or two or three or four lives, it works. When, like what someone said to me, they say if you save a life you save a generation and that is true. In everything that you do there is always going to be a risk that something might not go proper and whenever you’re dealing with human beings the fact that we all have our own character, our own characteristics, our own mentality, we think different than each other, people are bound to do contrary to what is expected of them.”
