Keeping with its digital transformation agenda, the government opened a second U-Space location this week, this time in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Cayo District. The U-Space initiative is aimed at making information and communication technologies (ICTs) easily accessible to students. The spaces also provide programs that will help foster creativity in young minds. At the launch of Benque’s U-Space yesterday, Area Representative of Cayo West, Jorge Espat, said that the facility will create a safe environment that will also be used to instill values in students.
The initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology. Namrita Balani, the ministry’s Director of Science and Technology, noted that the U-Space has transformed a facility that was once a prison into a place of learning.
Also partnering on the initiative were UNICEF Belize, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), and the Belize National Library Service and Information System. The government also launched a U-Space in San Ignacio Town yesterday.
