Guilty Verdict for Men Accused of Belize City Businessman’s Murder

The two men accused of the murder of the Belize City businessman Shawn Menzies have been found guilty. Today, Eric Miranda and Jeffrey Contreras, appeared in the High Court of Belize, where, Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft handed down the guilty verdict. Reading a fifty-three-page judgment, Justice Sandcroft’s ruling was influenced by the testimonies of the prosecution’s witnesses, including that of Iran Jones who was murdered days after testifying in the trial. Justice Sandcroft said that he was satisfied that the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the men were responsible for Menzies’s death. He has reserved sentencing for December 7. The prosecution for the trial was handled by Crown Counsel is Riis Cattouse, while Miranda and Contreras were represented by Attorneys, Darrell Bradley and Arthur Saldivar. However, neither of their attorneys were present in court today. Attorney Kimberly Wallace of Lavender Chambers appeared in their place. Menzies was fatally shot in November 2018.
