Since the start of the month, Belizeans have been reeling under a heatwave that the National Meteorological Service says is expected to continue for another week. Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon says that the primary reason for this is that we are under a ridge of high pressure at the mid-levels of the atmosphere which is suppressing in a sort of upward motion. He explained that the pressure is keeping all the heat trapped near the surface, which is also causing “hazy conditions.” Apart from high temperatures, Gordon says that western Belize is also facing poor visibility and air quality today, due to the presence of Saharan dust. These conditions are forecast to remain for the next six days. Residents are advised to remain indoors as much as possible and to hydrate as much as possible.
