Indications are that the government portfolio for new growth industries is being resuscitated as a budget was recently approved to fund an office and staff, and for the first time in a long time, the Hemp Industry Oversight Committee has met. The meeting happened yesterday and saw matters on the agenda including pivotal developments in the hemp sector, the role of agencies in monitoring hemp developments in Belize and legislation, and the revision of an application for hemp research.  Based on a release sent from the Government’s Press Office, one of the focus in the meeting was the policy for approving hemp for research and investments in Belize. It is the hope of the government that the committee meeting and work would enhance the research and development framework for hemp in Belize. Love News understands that the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, is planning to collaborate with other ministries and stakeholders with the goal of establishing a robust environment for scientific research and investment. Hemp, scientifically known as Cannabis sativa, is a cultivated plant with a long history of use across the globe. Throughout recorded history, hemp has been utilized for its industrial fiber, seed and other oils, animal feed, and medicinal properties. Hemp is also renowned for its health benefits, which have been recognized since ancient times. Modern research has identified multiple compounds within the cannabinoid pathway that have significant effects on various health conditions.
