Opposition Leader Moses Shyne Barrow Refutes Claims of Redistricting Opposition

Leader of the Opposition, Moses Shyne Barrow, has rebutted the remarks made yesterday by Robert Lopez of the Belize Peace Movement (BPM). Lopez had indicated that the opposition has given no support to the redistricting exercise, translating to their support of the unconstitutionality of the voters’ list and unequal electoral divisions. In a press conference called this morning, Barrow countered Lopez’ statements and said that they are in support of redistricting and they have been vocal on their stance.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition:Call on the government at the next sitting of the House to take the bill through all it’s stages and if it’s going to be voted down let us vote it down and let us convene a new redistricting taskforce without Collet Montejo. Let the experts do their jobs and let them present a map that is in keeping with the constitution of this country and with what the experts have suggested. As I said the opposition we had taken the position that yes some of the mergers made sense, Queen Square and Mesopotamia that makes sense. Port Loyola going to Collet and Albert that made sense. So it is not that we objected with it in its entirety we agreed with creating a new division in Stann Creek West, new division in Belmopan, new division in Orange Walk, new division in Cayo we agree with all of those things but you know if you put poison in a vanilla milkshake yes the vanilla milkshake is my favorite but it’s still poison and you’ll still die and that is what this redistricting map represents. We agree with the majority of it there are just some blatant violations of the constitution that we reject wholeheartedly and we will push along with the Belize Peace Movement and all other like minded Belizeans to have redistricting done before the next general elections.”
