One man is fighting for his life, and another is behind bars following a shooting just after midnight on Saturday in Dangriga Town. Around 1 o’clock, 23-year-old Rayshawn Middleton was at a wake with 19-year-old Devin Bermudez and a minor when two men approached the trio. One of the men then punched Bermudez, who was sitting on his motorcycle, causing him to flee and leave his motorbike behind. The assailants also fled but returned with a third man demanding to take Bermudez’s motorcycle. Middleton then intervened and that’s when one of the men opened fire on him. Middleton was initially taken to the Southern Regional Hospital but later transferred to the Western Regional Hospital for further medical treatment. Love News spoke to his mother, Ezra Garcia, who says her son was only trying to assist his friend when his life was almost taken away.
Today, Nolberto Smith was arrested and charged for the shooting. He was arranged at the Dangriga Magistrate court on one count of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault. No plea was taken and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until October 23.
