Over the weekend, the People’s United Party’s secretariat responded to claims made by Corozal Area Representative Elvia Vega Samos last week. The Minister of State had taken to Facebook and made a lengthy post alleging the PUP undermined her and claimed the convention was greatly flawed. The party released a response on Saturday saying her claims were “baseless” and cautioned her to stop. Following Vega Samos’s loss at the convention last week to political newcomer Thea Garcia Ramirez, she took to social media to voice her discontent. Vega-Samos says that some of her supporters were removed from the voters list ahead of time, and further alleged that Mexican taxi men cast votes on convention day. The PUP denied the claims and stated Vega Samos was a part of the process when the voter’s list was finalized and that she signed off on the list. The party also said that only voters registered in Corozal Bay were allowed to vote. The PUP said quote, “The Party advises Elvia Vega-Samos and her supporters to cease immediately from making further baseless and outlandish public statements, knowing fully well that there is not an iota of evidence to validate such allegations,” end of quote. The party also said it will continue to work with Vega Samos as she completes her term as area representative.
