Minister of State Alleges Assault from a member of her own party

Minister of State for Human Development, Elvia Vega-Samos is alleging that she is in fear of her life and that she has been threatened by persons with the People’s United Party.  Vega has since gone to the Corozal Police Station to make a police report for reference, indicating that should anything happen to her, the investigators would be able to reference her report.  From all indications, there seems to be a rivalry of sorts that has brewing for some time now.  The PUP supporters are reportedly divided between two candidates, including Vega.  While Vega has made a police report of the incident, one Corozal resident has countered her report, saying that Vega is the perpetrator of intimidation among the voters who are not supporting her.  Vega took to social media on Saturday, and wrote, quote, “I was openly assaulted by an individual and my husband’s life was threatened. This was done by individuals from my own party who are desperate for power.”  End of quote.  The Corozal Bay resident, Dilan Cassanova, also went on social media, contradicting Vega’s story, saying that he has dozens of witnesses who saw Vega yelling and insulting him at the swearing-in celebration in Corozal.  According to Cassanova, they were dancing when he and Vega bumped into each other, and that Vega’s response to the incident was one of anger and rage that many persons witnessed.  Cassanova, in his post on Facebook, wrote, quote, “I Dilan Brian Cassanova will not stand anymore for anyone abusing their power and using their office and feel that they can trample my rights as she does to all of us regular everyday Corozaleños to gain political mileage.”  End of quote.  Love News asked Police Commissioner Chester Williams if this is an active investigation.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “It’s a matter that yes the police is looking into up in the north. It was brought to my attention and we are seeing what can be done about the matter.”

Reporter: The gentleman who Ms.Samos alleges assaulted her he is saying that Ms.Samos and her husband basically sort of clipped him while they were driving. He said that when we went to the police station the police told him he wouldn’t be able to make a complaint due to that incident. Are you able to comment on that and say whether that’s true ?

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I’m not aware of that at all. I know that a report was made and the police is looking into the matter.”

Our newsroom also reached out to Minister of Human Development, Dolores Balderamos-Garcia, asking her to weigh in on the allegations against her Minister of State.  This interview was done before midday when Minister Dolores was yet to be fully apprised of the situation.

Prime Minister Briceno also weighed in on the situation and stated that the party has moved to resolve the issues internally.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “I think success brings its own problems and you know people are getting very excited about wanting to represent which is not necessarily a bad thing but it’s unfortunate that we’d have this kind of behavior from both sides. I believe that we are one party, we are one family and if we have any problems we should try to work it internally and not outside.”

Reporter: Have you cautioned all parties to –

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “Well that’s a matter for the chairman that deals with these matters and I’ve already told him that he needs to well when I spoke with him over the weekend he said he’ll be looking into this and see how he can calm things down for us to be able to move forward.”

Vega received her Area Representative status after the PUP appointed her as Corozal Bay’s Standard Bearer after the passing of her brother, David Dido Vega.  David was elected in the November 2020 elections but died during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Elvia Vega was then elected in a by-election against UDP’s Hilberto Campos.  She was sworn in on April 9, 2021.
