Ministry of Education Launches TVET Policy Development Funded by MCC

The Ministry of Education Culture Science and Technology has officially begun efforts to develop a national policy for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Belize. The policy will be used to create a clear plan for the development of TVET in the country with accompanying legislation. The policy is being developed as part of a larger project being funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation. That project is valued at a hundred and twenty-five million dollars to support the development of Belize’s energy and education sector. Yolanda Gongora, Chief Education Officer for the Ministry explained that two teams from the Ministry will be working to develop the policy and hold consultations to have a draft document before the end of this year.

Gongora explained that previous attempts were made to develop TVET in Belize but those lacked the needed structure that the policy would provide. She added that developing TVET forms a part of the ministry’s strategic development plan, which has a special focus on capacity building.

The resulting policy will not only impact the delivery of education at the TVET institutes countrywide, but also the secondary schools that offer TVET courses.
