Police Commissioner Attends NASDEA Conference in US Virgin Islands

Police Commissioner Chester Williams is in the US Virgin Islands attending a conference of the National Alliance for State Drug Enforcement Agencies (NASDEA).  The conference concludes today, and according to Williams the discussions proved that several countries are plagued with crime, gangs and drugs.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I am attending a conference in the USVI that has to do with drugs, human trafficking, human smuggling, cybercrime, also addressing gang issues. So it’s a conference that is being hosted and it involves the chief of police from the Caribbean region as well as from FBI, DEA and the US Marshal. The thing is that when we discuss it among ourselves we see that our problems are similar. The issue of gangs as much as USVI is a very small country or a very small island, they have similar issues like us. And as much as we see that the crime here is not publicized, like we do Belize, many of the crimes committed here are not in the news network like what we do in Belize every gunshot that fires the media is there to make it public. So from outside looking in we believe that everything is so fine and dandy in the USVI, but when we’re here and we are getting the stories from the officers here we can see that they have the same problem as us in terms of the gang issue, the firearm issue, the robbery and so forth the same thing is happening here. And the same all across the Caribbean region.”
