Police Inspector Sentenced to Five Months in Prison for Wounding in Ladyville Incident

Police Inspector Christopher Martinez has been sentenced to five months in prison on a charge of wounding.  The entire case stems from a complaint by 29-year-old, Aaron Flowers who reported that Inspector Martinez had assaulted him with a padlock in the Ladyville Police detention cell in June 2023.  The senior cop pleaded guilty on August 29, and appeared today before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegadapola who listened to mitigation pleas and counters from the Director of Public Prosecution, Cheryl Lyn-Vidal.   Two ranking members of the Belize Police Department as well as Martinez’s wife took the stand to testify to his upstanding character as a policeman, a husband, and a father of two sons. Martinez also took the stand, apologized to Flowers, and pleaded to the court for leniency. Meanwhile, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Cheryl Lynn-Vidal asked the court to consider the fact that Martinez was an officer, on duty and in uniform when he walked into the Ladyville Police Station on June 16, 2023, took the padlock off the cell in which Flowers was detained and hit him over the head with it. In conclusion, the Chief Magistrate indicated that a mere fine would be inappropriate.  Using the one year ceiling for the offence of wounding, the Chief Magistrate made deductions for Martinez’s guilty plea, his clean record, and his sixteen years of service to the Belize Police Department. Flowers was able to speak to the media, outside the courthouse, saying he was satisfied with the sentence.

In his defence, Martinez had indicated that he and Flowers had gotten into a personal confrontation and that moments after, his house was shot up.  Flowers was never charged for that incident due to lack of evidence.  Martinez, the nephew of the Police Commissioner, enlisted in the Police Department in 2008.  At the time of the incident, the inspector was attached to the Special Patrol Unit (SPU).
