Prime Minister weighs in on port situation

The PM also weighed in on whether he believes the government should move toward nationalizing the port. The Leader of the Opposition recently stated that he believes that nationalizing the port would remove some of the issues being faced by the CWU. Briceno says that it is a discussion being had by members of the Cabinet.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “There are so many things that we have to look at before we reach to that point. I think we need to speak with the owners to see what are their real intentions and if they do not have any interest in doing the proper investments then we have to sit down with them either to buy them out or nationalize but we’re not there yet.”
