Senate Inquiry Motion Filed to Investigate Belize-Portico Agreement
A motion for a Senate Inquiry into the Definitive Agreement has been sent to the President of the Senate by the social partners. The motion calls for a composition of a Special Select Committee that will comprise of six senators including an elected Chairman that will look into the signing of the agreement between the Government of Belize and Portico Enterprises Limited. The committee will be tasked to determine what advice, policy or basis the Cabinet relied upon to establish the validity of the document titled “Definative Agreement; to look into all communication and documentation tied to the agreement; to determine which, if any, established procedures and/or investment policy were followed; to look into the related draft legislation and the Cabinet White Paper presented in May 2023 on the stated recommendation of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Tourism; to determine whether, consequent on the investigation and inquiry, that statutory and other procedures were complied with; and to call on any individual albeit government ministers, signatories to the agreement or any person who may have information on the agreement. The motion also calls for all hearings to be done LIVE for public consumption, with the exception of closed door meetings for deliberations by the committee. The motion will be officially presented at the next Senate meeting scheduled for Monday, June 19, 2023. According to the NGO Senator, Janelle Chanona, the motion comes after a meeting with the social partners, and has since been shared with the current government and the main opposition party. Love News has received confirmation from the Leader of the Opposition, Moses Shyne Barrow, that they are supporting the motion and will be participating when the time comes.
