Sex Offenders Registry in Belize Still Unfulfilled Six Years Later

For several years, residents have been hearing of the development of a Sex Offenders Registry for Belize.  As a matter of fact, in November 2018, there was an official launch of the registry.  At this official launch, the Belize Crime Observatory introduced a new online portal that would have engaged social workers, educators, law enforcement officials, civil rights groups, non-governmental agencies and other interested parties.  All that was done six years ago, and to date there is no registry.  Police Commissioner Chester Williams was asked for an update on this endeavor.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “We do have the law to support a sexual offenders registry. It is something that we’re working on. We should be doing it either through the Belize Crime Observatory or our PITU unit. It will be done in collaboration with, again, with the Ministry of Human Development to make sure we can capture all those persons who are convicted sex offenders in Belize. So I think that pretty soon we should be able to have that up and running.”

Interestingly, if and when the registry is developed, members of the public would not have easy access to the list of sex offenders.
