SI 39 of 2024: PUC’s Efforts Towards Electricity Market Competition

Statutory Instrument Number 39 of 2024 was approved on March 4, 2024.  It is a piece of legislation that will see the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) fulfilling its mission in creating a sustainable and competitive market when it comes to electricity use and generation.  Essentially, the smaller man will have it easier to generate and marketing energy without the tedious bidding process.  According to the PUC, this SI signals the modernizing of the existing regulatory environment for electricity supply, transmission, and energy storage.  Additionally, the regulation zooms in on three categories of licenses, and will allow for competition in the generation and distribution of electricity; private sector investment through independent power generation; open access to the grid to facilitate direct energy sales, and a regulatory framework that is transparent and fosters healthy competition.  We will have more on this in subsequent news reports.
