Trial Begins for Alleged Killer of Businessman Leslie Gillett

Two years after businessman Leslie Gillett was gunned down, his alleged killer, 24-year-old Earl Baptist Jr is standing trial for his murder. This morning, the matter kicked off in the High Court, where survivance footage of the murder took center stage. In January 2022, Leslie was at his establishment in Burrel Boom Village when two men entered and shot him dead. In court, the Crown was able to tender footage of the murder into evidence and played the surveillance tape in court. The prosecution called 15 witnesses, six of whom will take the stand and nine others whose statements were only read out in court as evidence. The Crown’s witnesses included two police officers, one of whom was identified Baptist as one of the gunmen. The cop told the court that he was positive that Baptist was one of the men seen in the footage captured moments before Gillett was killed. The trial was adjourned for Wednesday, June 19 before Justice Derick Sylvester. Baptist was represented by attorney Leeroy Banner.
