A man who was charged for raping an American tourist has been set free after the case fell apart due to a lack of evidence. Adam Meighan appeared in the Belize High Court today, to learn that the prosecutor had entered a nolle prosequi, abandoning the case against him. The prosecutor explained that there was no DNA evidence gathered from the victim at the time of the alleged rape. Meighan was accused of raping the 49-year-old victim in the Vista Del Mar area of Ladyville, back in December 2018. She told police that she had was leaving her home when she saw a man with a rusty machete walking towards her. She said that that while she was examining the road to see if her vehicle would make it through the mud, the man walked behind her and slammed her down then raped her. She gave a description of her attacker to police which led to Meighan’s arrest. The victim died the following year. We note that this is Meighan’s second charge of rape that has not ended in conviction.
