UDP Chairman Peyrefitte Open to Stepping Aside If the Party Finds Better Person for the Job

Over the past few years, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has seen losses in the general elections, and municipal elections, and had many of its internal disagreements made public. And through it all, Michale Peyrefitte has held on to his position as Party Chairman. When questioned this week on whether or not he feels he should step aside and let someone else be chairman, he said that he has no problem doing so, as the party should always be in search of the best fit for the job.

Michael Peyrefitte, UDP Party Chairman: “Of course they should always be looking to replace anybody. Nobody is – this is not as I said earlier this is not a dictatorship. This is not anything like that. Anybody can be replaced. Anybody can be told “listen to me you’ve served your time.” The minute my party tells me that sure I’m gone. I mean nobody is anywhere forever you know but I do value a lot of the people who say “Boy Mike since you’ve been chairman it’s been bad you know with all this fighting and everything but maybe if you weren’t there it would be worse.” So at least we have not drawn blood yet and I take great pride in that. So anybody can do better anybody can do worse and I don’t take myself seriously to the point where I think I am irreplaceable in any way shape or form. The day will come when that will come and I can assure you I am not chairman for life. I can assure you that sooner rather than later I could very well decide listen there are other things that I may want to do within the party and that somebody else should get a crack at it. That’s par for the course.”

Peyrefitte stressed that internal issues within political parties are a part of the process and that PUP has been through the same. He also said that if the party wanted to remove him it would have, but he has not gotten any indication of such intentions.

Michael Peyrefitte, UDP Party Chairman: “We look at this PUP like some juggernaut right ? When the UDP won the Belize City Council in 2006 it wasn’t for another twelve years you know that they won the city council if my maths is correct. We have been in this situation for about three years going on four years so to speak ? It’s not a very very long time. It feels like a lifetime given what has happened but it’s not a very very long time and we have for example a current Prime Minister who was not the leader of his party eighteen months before he became Prime Minister. I mean things change you know ? There was a time when there was a PUP leader for about an hour and so look politics is very fluid. What I can tell you about me is that nobody will tell me when it’s time for me to leave I will make that determination. I was voted in the by the National Convention to be the chairman, there are provisions within the constitution of the party that you can call a national convention and you can remove me if you want. People are free to do that and them having not done it and we show no lack of interest in triggering these things, if that was what people wanted within the party they would have done that. But if enough people come to me and tell me that they want me to go I’ll go but most people have told me that they want me to stay at least for now during these trying times so that at the very least when the daggers are drawn they are not actually used. So I’m trying to keep us alive.”

Peyrefitte took over as Party chairman on February 9, 2020. He succeeded former chairman Alberto August.
