The Alliance for Democracy has warned of a fraudulent release being circulated that purports that its members are moving to start a third party. The release referred to the alliance as the “Alliance for Democracy Party” and stated that the upcoming convention planned for October 20, will be used to select a party executive. Tracy Panton, who became the Albert division Area Representative under the United Democratic Party (UDP), says that the fake release was distributed by mischief makers who seek to undermine efforts to reform the UDP. Panton maintains that all the members of the alliance are members of the UDP and that the upcoming convention, despite rebuttal from the party chairman, is a bonafide UDP convention.
Tracy Panton, Area Representative, Albert Division: “There’s definitely mischief going on. The United Democratic Party is having the convention on October 20th, 2024 at Birds Isle beginning at 10am. Whoever is the mischief maker and I think I have an idea who it is, has sent out a public notice saying that this convention is a convention that is being hosted by the alliance ADP which I understand means Alliance Democratic Party. There is no third party that we are trying to form. The members of the alliance are members of the United Democratic Party and we share similar views as to what is going on with the democracy internally with the party and there was a petition signed by 232 delegates of the national convention requesting that a national convention be held so we can have a focal reset and get back to the constitutional arrangement of the party. It is based on that petition that we’re hosting this national convention of the United Democratic Party. It is duly petitioned, the signatures are all confirmed and based on that petition by our delegates this convention will proceed. The present chairman of the United Democratic Party dismissed those delegates when they requested the national convention without any cause or reason and he does not have the authority to dismiss. It is not his prerogative to dismiss. The constitution of the party is clear once one third of the delegates of the, 25% of the delegates of the national convention request a convention convention must be held. 25% of delegates is somewhere around 170 delegates. In this case 232 delegates made that request.”
This evening, the Alliance issued a notice inviting supporters of the UDP in Belmopan to attend the convention, which is being held at the Bird’s Isle in Belize City. Busses will be leaving from nine areas in Belmopan to get attendees to the venue on convention day.
