A home was destroyed by fire on Sunday evening in Pomona, Stann Creek District.  Love News understands that three children were home alone when the fire broke out.  According to the landlord, Christopher West, the house was being rented to a family of five.

Christopher West, Landlord: “Well, I get a call and when I came here this had already been engulfed in flames and then I get some buckets and start to wet the side of that one there. If not, we’d have lost that as well. But with the help of who were here with buckets and whatnot, we managed to keep that cool and out it because it was already on fire as you can see and we tried to get it out with lone buckets, hoses and water and we keep it, we get it out. I was told then that three kids were left inside the house alone and one of the boys who were left alone a lit a piece of paper and threw it on the bed and there where it caught fire, that’s what I was told I’m not sure, I was told that by some people who were around here. So that’s what happened.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: Anything happened to the kids?

Christopher West, Landlord:  “No, the neighbor down there managed to go up and take them out because they were crying up there. The house was on fire and they were inside crying and she went up and then took them out.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: What size was this house?

Christopher West, Landlord:  “This is 18 by 20.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: Is that upstairs?

Christopher West, Landlord:  “Yeah, it was an upstairs and downstairs wooden structure with zinc roofing.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: How many bedrooms?

Christopher West, Landlord:  “Two bedrooms.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: What was the total cost of this house, more or less?

Christopher West, Landlord:  “More or less, I’d say about 35,000.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: Was it insured?
Christopher West, Landlord:“No, it wasn’t insured, Harry. That’s a complete loss for me.”

The fire occurred at around six thirty Sunday evening.  No injuries were reported in this incident.
