Jamaican National Carlos Higgins Released Amidst Legal Battle, Wanted for Sexual Crimes

Jamaican national, Carlos Higgins was in the custody of immigration to be expelled from the country, but was released tonight after authorities were informed that they could neither keep him in detention nor could they deport him.  Higgins was in the local news late last year when he was refused entry into the country in November.  Immigration officials had taken him to court for rendering false information upon his arrival, but that matter was thrown out.  Higgins then turned around and accused the government of unlawful detention, but that matter was also thrown out by the courts.  Tonight, he gets to remain in the country, as he has applied for a review in the courts for his right to enter Belize under the Chaguaramas Treaty.  The concerning issue in this story is that Higgins is a wanted man in his home country.  Belize officials had reportedly received the Red Notice from Interpol Jamaica, indicating that Higgins is wanted for a list of sexual crimes, including child rape.  The justification for Higgins being a free man tonight is that he has a right to be heard in court for the review application he had submitted via his attorney.  This is a story that we will keep following.
