Woman remains in fear after she was attacked inside her home in western Belize

Thirty-nine days ago, a woman was stabbed multiple times to the neck and the chest area as she slept in her bed with her child.  Emelda Rodriguez was asleep in her home in Camalote Village, Cayo District, when she was awoken by a dark shadow standing over her.  Having begged the intruder to not hurt her child, she was taken outside the room.  The man, whom she doesn’t recognize, had a firearm, but when the gun jammed, the assailant reportedly, broke a glass bottle and proceeded to stab and slice her across the neck and chest area.  It has been close to six weeks since Emelda went through this ordeal.  Her sense of security and safety is gone, and according to the family, the Police have done nothing to address the incident.  Today, she sat down with our Belmopan Correspondent, and recalled the night of December 3, 2023.  Her suspicions are that the attack may have been the result of a custody battle with her estranged partner.

Emelda Rodriguez, Victim of Home Invasion: “I just saw something dark over me and when I opened my eyes I was like all I said was “No. No. No.” and I saw like someone with a gun in front of my bed and then I just lifted up my hand and told the person “Please don’t hurt me in front of my baby.” So he told me “come out of the room.” so I came out of the room and he asked me what I had with bally at foreign and the only person I talk to that is out of the country is my baby’s father. First thing my mind ran on was he sent that person to come hurt me or send a hit on me or something. Like it just sudden that my niece lives in front of the house so I wasn’t really frightened or anything. She came, as she came in the person just hit her in her head with the gun and then from there I fell in the sofa that was by the door and I just heard something hit and I think it was a pint bottle or something hit and when I heard that hit he just came and attacked me and started to stab me. And I tried fighting then I just passed out but when I passed out I was like still conscious and I just felt like when the person dragged me off of the sofa and like he as going to finish hurting me when I just saw him ran outside and I think my niece had already ran outside.”

Rodriguez says her two children, ages nine and five, were taken from October last year.  She noted that the Police have not updated her on the case, and she has been living in constant fear since then.

Emelda Rodriguez, Victim of Home Invasion: “He took my two daughters with him without my permission to go live with him in France and I always talk to them, well I usually talk to them not everyday but ever other week or so. I have to beg him to talk to my own children. So the last time I spoke to him was before this happened and he told me if I could please go remove my report and everything from Interpol that his friend that works at Interpol could deal with everything. So I told him nobody, police or anybody is following up with it because it’s already a whole year since he took them and like I don’t know like he told me to just remove it but I didn’t answer him or anything until a week afterwards then I know that he sent people to come hurt me.”

Reporter: So it was a week after.

Emelda Rodriguez, Victim of Home Invasion: “Like when we messaged me if I could go remove the report and everything because I asked him why he can’t just bring back my children so I can see them. He said the only way he could bring them back to Belize is if I go remove the report and then so they could travel but right now they can’t travel to come to Belize but they can travel where they are. I haven’t heard anything from the police. All they said is that they’re doing their investigation.”

Reporter: And now you still fear for your life that somebody might try to come back ?

Emelda Rodriguez, Victim of Home Invasion: “Well that is what I always think. Like I feel like somebody could come back or you know ? Or even if they don’t come to my house if I go out maybe they catch me in public or something like that.”

We will keep following this story.
